Description

Kingsthorpe Grove Lower School, built in 1905 by Law and Harris, is a school located in Northampton. It is constructed of red brick with moulded terracotta dressings and features plain tile roofs with numerous coped gables, finials, and various brick stacks. The building is designed in a simplified Flemish Renaissance style and has a symmetrical layout centered around a central hall, with wings on either side and a Nursery Unit to the left, connected by a wall and ornamental gateway. The school is mostly single storey and has a long facade with glazing bar sash windows. The hall features mullion and transom windows with leaded lights that include art nouveau style stained glass. The Nursery Unit mirrors this style. To the right of the main building, there is another ornamental gateway and wall.

Inside, the Nursery Unit has a central hall surrounded by classrooms, all of which retain their original fireplaces. The hall is adorned with dado tiling and features art nouveau style stained glass in the end windows. The main range includes a larger central hall with more elaborate stained glass, along with corridors leading to classrooms, which also have original fireplaces and dado tiling. Slightly detached to the right is the Cookery Centre, which forms part of the group. The entire school is an excellent example of its period, remaining largely intact and showcasing many fine details.
