Description
The County Council Offices, originally the Old Gaol, were built between 1791 and 1794 by Robert Furze Brettingham and later enlarged by James Milne in 1846. The building is constructed from ashlar stone and features a hipped roof covered with Welsh slates. It stands three storeys tall, with a recessed west wing. The north elevation displays a pattern of five and three sash windows set in reveals beneath flat arches. A cornice runs along the second floor level, complemented by a cornice band. The County Council Offices are part of a group that includes the Judge's Lodgings, Sessions House, County Hall, and Nos 8, 8A, 9, and 9A.
