Description

The Theatre Royal, built in 1884 by C. J. Phipps, was known as the Opera House until 1927. It features a stucco front and is listed primarily for its interior, which retains original decoration in the auditorium. Notable interior elements include applied ornamentation around the proscenium arch, tall fluted columns in the boxes, and a scroll acanthus leaf motif on the front panels of the dress circle parapet. The bombe upper circle parapet has raised decoration, and there is a large shallow decorated ceiling dome with a pierced center.
