Description

The North Building, formerly Hardingstone Union Workhouse, was constructed in 1839, as indicated by a plaque in the central pediment. The building is an example of Neoclassical architecture, built in ashlar stone. It comprises a two-story central section and wings, connected by single-story recessed links. The building is roofed with Welsh slate, featuring stone cornices and a central first-floor band. A slight projection is located under the pediment. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set within reveals and arranged under flat arches, in a pattern of 2:4:1:3:1:4:2. Angle pilasters are present on the end wings. Later extensions, matching the original style and materials, have been added on the right side (a single-story, one-window addition) and on the left side (a two-story, two-window addition).
