Description

This is a group of properties: numbers 18, 18A, 20, 20A, and 22, located on Sheep Street. The building's core dates to the 17th century and was extended in the 18th century with the addition of a top floor. The lower two floors are constructed of ashlar stone, while the upper level is stuccoed. A Welsh slate roof covers the building. There are seven windows on each of the upper floors. The shop fronts appear to be from the late 19th or early 20th century. A simplified Ionic pilaster design is visible on the first floor, accompanied by two niches located at number 20. It is believed that the buildings may have served as a town house for the Earl of Halifax. A plaque commemorates the site of Dr Doddridge's Dissenting Academy, which operated here from around 1740 to 1752. The group originally included number 24, which has since been demolished.
