Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a church that was rebuilt in 1822, incorporating some medieval elements. It is constructed from coursed squared ironstone and limestone, featuring an old tile roof over the chancel and a slate roof over the nave. The church includes a chancel, nave, west tower, and south porch. The chancel has a three-light east window from the 14th century, which features tracery with trefoils and mouchettes. There is a south priest's door, also from the 14th century, with a continuous chamfered arch. The nave windows are from the 19th century and have Y-tracery. The south porch has an entrance with a continuous chamfered arch. A stone plaque in the gable bears the inscription, 'This church rebuilt A.D. 1822', and there is a ball finial and sundial at the apex. The inner doorway features an arch with a continuous hollow chamfer, likely from the 14th century, and a large medieval carved stone head has been re-set as a keystone. The 19th-century tower has a castellated parapet and single-light bell openings, with hoods that are surmounted by carved heads.

Inside, the tower arch and chancel arch date from the 14th century. There is an octagonal font on a baluster pedestal, probably from the late 17th century. The church retains its original box pews and commandment boards from 1822. A marble wall monument to Ann Moore, who died in 1683, features a finely carved frame with drapery swags, a cartouche, and a cherub's head.
