Description

The Cottage is a house with origins in the 17th century, altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of regular coursed limestone and brick, with a Collyweston slate roof. Originally, it had a three-unit plan. The house is two storeys high and has a four-window arrangement at the first floor, featuring 19th-century casements with glazing bars, set under wooden lintels. There are three late 19th-century canted wooden bay windows at ground floor. A part-glazed double door, situated to the right of centre, has a 17th-century moulded stone surround with a four-centred arch head. Shallow buttresses are present at the corners of the building. The house has ashlar gable parapets and ashlar ridge and end stacks, featuring moulded cornices. A 19th-century one-bay extension is attached to the left. Further 19th- and 20th-century extensions are located at the rear. The interior was noted to contain an open fireplace with an arched bressumer in the room to the far left. The centre and right rooms have been combined into one, with 19th-century fireplaces at each end.
