Description
The front block of Saint Mary's Hospital was built between 1836 and 1838 by George Gilbert Scott in a Neoclassical style, originally serving as a workhouse. The building features a lowered and central octagon that has been significantly altered since 1971. It is constructed of squared rubble and ashlar with Welsh slated roofs. The design includes projecting central and end blocks, with a further projection that is pedimented at the center. The lower connecting wings and end blocks are two storeys high. The façade is adorned with a pattern of sash windows, arranged in a 1:5:1:3:1:5:1 configuration, featuring glazing bars, stone lintels, and rusticated stone flat arches over the central block. Additional architectural details include quoins, floor and eaves bands, and a modern glazed porch.
