Description
The Tansor War Memorial is located in the churchyard near the east end of the Grade II*-listed church of St Mary the Virgin. It stands approximately 3 meters tall and features a limestone cross designed in the medieval style. The cross has a Greek cross head with a raised crown on its face, set upon a rectangular shaft. This shaft rises from an octagonal plinth, which is supported by a two-stepped octagonal base.
Four faces of the plinth display inscriptions. The first face honors the men of Tansor who lost their lives in World War I, stating: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF TANSOR WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY 1914-1918 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The second face offers a message of hope: "THAT HAVING ALL THINGS DONE, AND ALL YOUR CONFLICTS PAST, YE MAY OBTAIN THROUGH CHRIST ALONE A CROWN OF JOY AT LAST." The third face reads: "THEIR REWARD IS WITH THE LORD AND THE CARE OF THEM IS WITH THE MOST HIGH." The names of the six men from the parish who died are inscribed on the fourth face.
