Description
The stable block at Boughton House, built around 1700 to 1704 and restored between 1976 and 1981, features a limestone ashlar front with red brick sides and rear, topped with hipped Collyweston stone slate roofs. The main block has cross-wings that project slightly at the front. It is two storeys high with a raised band between the floors and an eaves cornice. The central entrance is rusticated with a tall round-headed opening, which has a Britannia firemark above it, and is topped with a pediment that includes heraldic carving by Gideon Duchesne. The upper section features rusticated angle pilasters and three square panels, along with a leaded dome that has a ball finial and weathervane. Each side of the central feature has three bays with leaded cross casement windows, which are taller on the ground floor than on the first floor. The projecting ends of the wings are three windows wide and have similar detailing along with rusticated angle pilasters. Some interior fittings remain, including a staircase with turned balusters in the south wing.
