Description
The gatepiers, gates, attached screen, and lodge house located approximately 50 meters southeast of the Manor House are likely from the early 20th century and attributed to Sir Reginald Blomfield. They are constructed of squared coursed limestone and limestone ashlar, featuring wrought iron gates. The lodge house has a Collyweston slate roof. There are two pairs of gatepiers, with the inner and outer piers connected by a wall that includes a square-headed pedestrian gateway. The inner piers are decorated with horizontally channelled ashlar and arch-headed niches, and they are topped with large urns that have swags and torchere finials. Standing figures are attached to the urns on the inner piers. While the inner piers were once linked by gates, they are now connected by an ashlar screen with balusters, and there are wrought-iron gateways for pedestrian access. The single-storey lodge house, which is attached to the right, likely has a two-unit plan and features a main front that faces the former driveway, complete with a central gablet and a recessed porch supported by columns. This structure was formerly the main entrance to Apethorpe Palace and was modified in the mid-20th century.
