Description

Hawthorn Farmhouse is a house dating from the 17th century, constructed of flint with red brick quoins and dressings. It features a large hipped roof made of old tiles, with flanking stacks and two hipped dormers on the west side, along with three modern dormers on the east. The building has a moulded wooden cornice and stands two storeys high with an attic raised on a semi-basement. There is a moulded brick band at the first floor level and a brick plinth.

On the west side, there is a central modern porch, and above it, a half-level staircase window made of old leaded oak framing. The windows include a 2-light window that breaks into the floor band and a 3-light window under the eaves. Each main floor has a 3-light leaded window on both sides, which appear to have been reduced in height. Brick relieving arches are present above the band course. The south elevation is similar but has modern casements fitted into old openings.

The east elevation features central steps leading to a pair of half-glazed doors set in a brick opening, flanked by large carved stone scrolls, although the canopy is missing. There is a dated tile above the opening that reads either 1632 or 1652. A lower wing has been added to the north side, also built of flint and brick with an old tiled roof hipped at the north end.

Inside, there is a very fine original dog-leg staircase with circular newels that have finials and pendants, a moulded handrail, and large circular balusters. The kitchen has a moulded fireplace surround, while other interior features have not been seen.
