Description

Prebendal House School, dating from the 18th century and subsequently altered, is a three-storey building. The front facing the churchyard has rendered bands at the first and second floor levels and a moulded cornice. It is topped by a hipped slate roof. The front has five windows, with narrow panels flanking the central window above the upper floors. There are two three-light windows on the ground floor and two smaller windows on either side of the entrance door and below the flanking panels on the upper floors. The central entrance has an eight-panel door set within a panelled surround featuring an architrave, a curved frieze, a moulded cornice, and a central key-block with a bedmould extending from the cornice. The architrave is embellished with rusticated blocks. A central porch with two Ionic columns, wall pilasters, an entablature carved with an oak leaf pattern, a bracketed cornice and a pediment fronts the entrance. The front facing the garden has flanking 19th-century bays, originally featuring a central porch, characterized by engaged Doric columns and an entablature with a triglyph frieze and dentilled cornice. A contemporary first-floor window was formerly similarly embellished. The interior includes a contemporary staircase and other fittings such as panelling and fireplaces. A lower red brick south wing also exists. The house was formerly the residence of John Wilkes, whose wife was from a local family. A staircase with carved spandrels and spiral turned balusters rises the full height of the building. A hall features a segmental arch with archivolt on fluted Doric columns. The west garden front exhibits two-storey semi-octagonal bays. A central staircase window is set within an eared architrave surround, featuring fluted Roman Ionic pilasters, an entablature with a pulvinated frieze, and a modillion pediment.
