Description
West Wycombe Park House is a significant building that dates from the later 17th century or early 18th century and was remodeled around 1735 to 1765 for Sir Francis Dashwood Bart, Lord Le Despencer. This stone and stucco house has a rectangular plan with its long sides oriented north and south. The north front features a Palladian design with a projecting central pediment supported by four engaged Roman Ionic columns. The east elevation includes a tetrastyle Doric portico adorned with frescoes, which are currently being restored, as depicted in an engraving from 1757.
The south front, designed by John Donovell around 1760, features a double, superimposed colonnade with Tuscan columns on the ground floor and Corinthian columns on the first floor, along with a central projecting pediment. The ground floor ceiling and the east end wall also display frescoes. The west front showcases a Greek Ionic hexastyle portico, inspired by the Temple of Teos in Greece, featuring a coffered and frescoed soffit. This design was created around 1765 by Robert Adam and modified by Nicholas Revett.
Inside, the ground floor ceilings are printed by Borgnis, either by Giuseppe or his son Giovanni. The house contains carved marble chimneypieces, with one in the State Drawing Room crafted by Henry Cheere and another in the Dining Room by Thomas Carter. The staircase features wall paintings inspired by Raphael's Vatican Loggie.
