Description
No. 1 Church Street is a 18th-century building that stands two storeys high with an attic and a cellar. The exterior is made of vitreous brick with red dressings and window surrounds, featuring a moulded brick eaves cornice and an old tile roof. It has two-light gabled dormer casements.
On the first floor, there are five windows, along with a panel to the right of the centre and above the door, which is dated 1739. The ground floor also has five segmental-headed windows, all with moulded frames and fluted keystones. The entrance features an eight-panel door set in a panelled reveal with an architrave, located in the third bay from the right. This doorcase is supported by engaged Doric columns and topped with an entablature and pediment, accessed by three stone steps. The gable end is timber framed.
Inside, the building showcases heavy moulded ceiling beams with square stops, shaped wall posts, and roof beams, all dating from the 16th century. Part of the staircase is original. There is a lower wing on the left that includes a wide ground floor carriageway and a first-floor door leading to the loft.
