Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Peters, located on St Peter's Street, was built in 1846 by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. The church is constructed from flint with stone dressings and features an asymmetrical west front that faces the street. It has a gabled end to the nave and a tower on the north side, topped with a broached stone spire. Inside, the church houses a famous relic believed to be the hand of St James the Apostle, and possibly that of St Anastasius, who was martyred in the 7th century. Both relics were originally from Reading Abbey. The church also includes a rood screen created by G Myers, along with metalwork and glass designed by Hardman.
