Description

The Drayton Parslow War Memorial, unveiled in 1921, is located on Main Road at the junction with Chapel Lane in Drayton Parslow.

The memorial stands approximately 2.5 meters high and consists of a pillar that tapers at the top, featuring an elaborate square-sectioned crown and a pyramidal cap. A wreath is carved in relief on the lower half of the main (northeast) face. The pillar is mounted on a tall plinth, which is separated from the pillar by a cornice. The entire structure rests on a three-stepped base.

The northeast face of the plinth displays a dedication along with the names of seven individuals who fell during the First World War. The inscription reads: "ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF DRAYTON PARSLOW IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." Below this, there is a line followed by the names of the fallen, listed with forenames followed by surnames. Beneath the top step's riser, it reads "AND 1939 – 1945," along with the names of two individuals who also fell, again listed with forenames and surnames.

The northwest and southeast faces of the plinth feature the names of men from the village who served in the First World War and returned, with 21 names on one side and 22 on the other. Each side includes the inscription "IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO SERVED" above the list of names, separated by a short line. The names are presented as initials followed by surnames, and all lettering on the memorial is inset and painted black with lead.
