Description
Baylins Farmhouse is a late medieval hall house with later alterations, located on Penn Road in Knotty Green. The building is two storeys high and features a timber frame with brick and tile hanging. The south elevation includes a gabled wing on the right, which has its upper part tile hung and a three-light casement window. The left side is brick with a timber arched door next to the wing leading to a passage, a four-light casement on the ground floor, and two three-light casements on the first floor. There is an addition on the far right that is two storeys high with a hipped roof, designed by Sir Edward Maufe in 1925. A loggia addition on the left was created by Forbes and Tate in 1919. The eastern elevation of the wing displays exposed timber framing. A north-east block was added, and a cart shed was adapted into the present north-west wing by Forbes and Tate. The building features an old tile roof and brick stacks. Inside, there is an original arch braced hall truss and curved wind braces visible on the first floor. The dining room contains 16th to 17th century panelling, while the living room has 16th century floor beams with stencilled decorations by Macdonald Gill from the early 20th century. This house was the home of Ambrose Heal, for whom it was carefully adapted by Forbes and Tate, as noted in "Small Country Houses of Today Vol 3" by Sir Lawrence Weaver, published in Country Life in 1925.
