Description

Nos 1 to 4 Ward Place are a range of barns that were converted into dwellings between 1975 and 1978. The buildings date from the 18th century and earlier. They feature a timber frame with brick infill, some flint panels, and weatherboarding on the cross wing at No 3. No 1 is attached to the rear of No 22 High Street. The buildings have a brick construction with an old tiled roof, and a tiled roof projection on the ground floor that includes a four-panel flush door, a six-light casement window to the left, and a modern one-light window on the right. There is a three-light casement window on the first floor, and the south gable has a two-light casement window on each floor. The section adjoining No 2 has a three-light casement window on the ground floor. No 2 has modern brick facing, is two stories high, has an old tiled roof, and features modern joinery. No 3, which is in the cross wing with a carriageway beneath, is also two stories high with an old tiled roof and modern joinery. The interior of the buildings showcases fine exposed timbers from the 16th century, possibly earlier, with some reconstruction, good curved braces to the tiebeams, and massive first-floor beams and joists. No 4 has a brick facade, an old tiled hipped roof, and two stories with modern joinery. The group is included for its collective value.
