Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed medieval parish church located on Church Street in Chesham. It features a 12th-century north transept window, a 13th-century nave and aisles, and a widened chancel arch. The mid-14th-century tower, chancel, and south aisle were rebuilt, while the 15th century saw the addition of a clerestorey and a south porch. The church is constructed of flint and stone, with slate and lead roofs, and has a Latin cross plan with a tower over the crossing and a clerestorey to the nave. It underwent significant restoration between 1868 and 1869 by the architect G G Scott. Notable stained glass is present in two small windows by Burne-Jones. The church contains several interesting monuments, including one to John Cavendish from 1617, a monument to Nicholas Skottowe by John Bacon from 1792, and an obelisk in the south transept dedicated to Mary Whichcote from 1726. There is also a brass in the south aisle dated 1670 and a room above the porch.
