Description
Stoke Place is a building that was originally completed in 1698, with wings added around 1755 and further additions in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick and has an old tile roof. The central section has two storeys, a basement, and an attic, featuring five bays with the central three bays projecting and topped with a pediment. The basement includes five 2-light casement windows, while the ground and first floors have five flush sash windows. A string course runs along the first floor level, and there are modern dormer windows. All windows have glazing bars.
To the left of the central section, there is a 2-bay addition in the same style, but with windows set in reveals. Flanking this are 18th-century wings; the left wing has six bays with segment-headed windows in reveals, although the ground floor windows have been altered. The right wing has four bays, with the ground floor featuring four Tuscan columns that support an entablature, creating a covered way, and flush windows beneath a hipped roof.
The garden elevation showcases large bow windows spanning two storeys of the wings, with a central doorcase featuring a curved pediment, while this side lacks a central pediment but has a timber dentil cornice. The interior contains remnants of rococo plasterwork and painted wall decoration, with the entrance hall featuring a screen of four Roman Doric columns. Sir George Howard lived here from 1771 to 1796.
