Description
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade I listed building located in Little Missenden Village. It has an Anglo-Saxon core dating from the 10th or 11th century, with 12th-century arcades, an early English chancel, and a north chapel from the early 14th century. The church features a timber-framed porch and a west tower from the 15th century. The exterior includes a brick south aisle from the 18th century, flint with limestone dressings, and some roughcast. The roofs are covered with old tiles, and the aisles have lead roofing. A modern vestry, designed in an 18th-century style by Quinlan Terry, is located to the north and has a roughcast finish with a hipped tiled roof. Inside, there are wall paintings from the 13th century depicting St Christopher, the Martyrdom of St Catherine, the Passion, the Crucifixion, and the Archangel Gabriel, along with 15th-century representations of the Seven Deadly Sins and 14th-century scenes of the Nativity and Majesty. The church also contains brasses and monuments, and features a 12th-century 'Aylesbury' font.
