Description
The Beaconsfield War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1921 by JO Cheadle, constructed by Wooldridge and Simpson. It was moved to its current location in 1936 and is made of Portland stone.
The memorial resembles a 'lanterne des morts', which refers to the medieval stone cemetery lanterns found in central and southern France. It features a two-stage plinth raised on a pair of York stone steps, supporting an octagonal column. The northern face of the column displays a roofed Calvary in high relief, while the south, east, and west sides have simple blind tracery. At the top, there is a square Gothic lantern with a broached pyramidal cap and a ball finial, which now contains a single electric light in a frosted glass shade, replacing the original four lights.
Around the upper plinth, the names of 80 individuals who died in the First World War are inscribed in leaded lettering on eight sunken granite panels. Above these panels is a carved inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE BRAVE & TRUE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 / ETERNAL REST GRANT UNTO THEM O LORD / AND LET LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE UPON THEM." Additionally, a bronze panel on the north side of the lower plinth lists 60 names from the Second World War. On the south side, there is a recess with small double-leaf oak doors featuring ornamental hinges, likely providing access to the electrical connection for the light.
The paving and post-and-chain fence surrounding the memorial are not original and are excluded from the listing.
