Description
The Church of St John is a parish church located in Radclive-cum-Chackmore. The nave and chancel were originally built in a transitional style and were restored in 1903. The church is constructed from rubblestone, with a copper roof over the nave and old tiles covering the chancel. The west tower dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and features a battlemented parapet and corner buttresses.
The nave has two decorated two-light windows on the north side and a three-light perpendicular window on the south side. The south doorway is adorned with zig-zag and dogtooth ornamentation and has carved foliage capitals, with a later porch added. The chancel includes paired lancets in both the north and south walls, along with a decorated two-light window in the east wall.
Inside, the nave features a blocked staircase leading to the road and a moulded lintel over a niche to the right of the chancel arch. The chancel arch is supported by columns with triangular ornamentation; the arch itself has been rebuilt, but fragments of the original arch with beakhead ornament are incorporated into the wall above. Notable fittings include an early 17th-century carved panel altar, early 17th-century altar rails with pierced balusters, 17th-century hat pegs along the south wall of the nave, and a Norman font.
