Description
The Old Post Office is a public room, former library, and house, dated 1827 as indicated by a plaque on the right gable. The building features pebble dash over brick, a half-timbered porch, and tiled roofs, with two brick stacks, each having three square shafts set diagonally. It is designed in a picturesque Gothick style and has two storeys.
The north front has five bays, with the outer bays set back. In the center, there is a two-storey projecting gabled porch, with a lean-to on the right. The inner bays are gabled to the front. The windows are irregular, featuring cast iron lattice casements on the ground floor and leaded casements on the first floor. There are two doors in four-centred arched frames, with similarly arched and glazed lights in the upper half. A verandah is present on the left side and at the rear. The building was constructed at the expense of Mr. Abel Smith, who was the son-in-law of Sir Harry Calvert of Claydon House.
