Description

Steps House is an unusual early 18th century house located on the north side of High Street in West Wycombe. The building features a colour washed brick plinth and ground floor, complemented by a large coved plaster cornice. The first floor is constructed of yellow brick with red brick quoins and dressings. It stands two storeys high with attics, showcasing four double hung sash windows in flush moulded wooden frames. The ground floor has fielded panelled shutters, while the first floor windows are topped with segmental arches.

Access to the house is via six red brick steps flanked by plain wrought iron railings, leading to a central fielded panelled door with a two-light rectangular fanlight above. The door is framed by fluted Roman Doric pilasters that support a frieze and cornice. The coved cornice on the ground floor slightly projects over the doorway and holds a wrought iron lamp bracket with an octagonal lamp. There is a central dummy window on the first floor, and the roof is hipped with old tiles, featuring a dentil and moulded red brick cornice, along with a dormer on the west return elevation.

Steps House is part of a group that includes Nos 35 to 37, The Church Loft, Nos 45 to 54, Nos 56 to 59, The Plough Inn, The Apple Orchard, The Old Smithy, West Wycombe Estate Office, Rose Cottage, and Ness Cottage.
