Description
The barn at the rear of The George Public House dates from the 15th or early 16th century and is likely to have been a courthouse. It is constructed with a timber frame and brick panels, and the yard side is colourwashed. The roof is made of old tiles. The barn is two storeys high, with the upper floor originally jettied over the yard side. An external stair leads to the first-floor entrance, which is sheltered by a roof that extends downwards. The building features modern casements, but several small original windows with moulded wooden mullions are blocked and still visible. Inside, there are chamfered arch-braced tie beam trusses, particularly notable is the fourth truss from the south end. Other trusses include curved braces and curved windbraces supporting the purlins.
