Description
Beamsley Hospital (north range) is a historic hospital and chapel built in 1593 and the 17th century. It features rubblestone and ashlar construction with graduated stone slate roofs and has a circular plan. The building is one storey high, with a central chapel that is illuminated by a clerestory. The entrance has a central board door set in a chamfered surround with a four-centred arch. On either side of the entrance are small 1-light chamfered window openings. The windows are 2-light with chamfered mullions. The circular clerestory on the roof has 3-light chamfered mullion windows with leaded panes, and there are three stacks between the windows, above a conical roof topped with a finial. Inside, the central chapel is also lit by the clerestory, and it is surrounded by seven radiating rooms, five of which open onto the chapel while two open into the entrance passage. Most of these rooms retain their original fireplaces. The chapel contains a circle of bobbin pews and a pulpit. The chapel was built by Lady Margaret Russell, Countess of Cumberland.
