Description
This barn, located approximately 100 meters east of Whernside Manor, is likely from the mid to late 18th century and has been altered. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with freestone dressings and features a corrugated asbestos sheet roof. The barn has a rectangular plan oriented on an east-west axis, facing north, and is designed in a Georgian style.
The structure is two storeys high and has raised regular quoins with symmetrically arranged openings. In the center, there are a pair of square windows with wedge lintels, and above them, a pair of round-headed loading doorways. Flanking these are round-headed doorways at ground level, with square windows beyond and keyed oculi above. Each end of the barn features a large round-headed wagon doorway, all with plain surrounds, imposts, and keystones.
The west gable wall matches the style of the front, containing three large doorways at ground level beneath round-headed blank arches, with keyed oculi above and a Diocletian window in the gable. The gables are coped. The rear and interior of the barn have not been inspected. This barn forms a group with West House Farmhouse.
