Description

Ladywell Cottage is a small house dating from the early to mid 17th century. It is constructed of gritstone rubble and has a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys with an attic and is arranged in a two-by-one bay format, featuring quoins. The entrance leads into a single-storey 20th-century extension on the left, which is not of special interest.

The west front showcases a four-light window with recessed chamfered straight-cut mullions on the ground floor, and a three-light and a two-light window on the first floor, both with hollow mouldings to the mullions. All windows have hoodmoulds. There is an end stack on the left, and the right side has weathered kneelers with gable coping.

At the rear, there is a single-storey added range that includes a 19th-century glazed door and a square chamfered window to the left. The left return shows slates that indicate the wall line and pitch of an earlier range, which has since been demolished. The right return features recessed chamfered mullion windows with four, three, and two lights, one on each floor; the first-floor window has a tall central light, and all have hoodmoulds.

The interior was not inspected during the resurvey. The house is located near a spring known as Our Lady's Well, just a few yards from the river, which was believed to strengthen weak eyes and remove evil spirits. A steep-roofed building that once adjoined Ladywell Cottage was likely cruck-built, and the existing bay was added in the 17th century.
