Description

Raydale House and Forest View is a farmhouse and cottage under one roof, dating from the mid-19th century for the farmhouse and the late 17th century for the cottage, with later alterations. The farmhouse is constructed of rendered rubble with dressed-rubble details and has a stone slate roof. It features two storeys and a rear outshut, with four first-floor windows. The cottage is built of rubble and also has a stone slate roof, with two storeys and four first-floor windows. The farmhouse has dressed-rubble quoined surrounds to its openings. In the second bay, there is a part-glazed door with an overlight, and in the fourth bay, a glazed door. The ground-floor windows are paired sashes divided by flat-faced mullions, while the first-floor windows are 4-pane sashes. Stone gutter brackets are present, and there are stacks at the ends and between the third and fourth bays.

On the left, the rear elevation of Forest View features 20th-century window openings, with one on the ground floor and stone gutter brackets. The rear elevation of the house includes a 2-light chamfered mullion window on the first floor of the outshut and a single-light window in a chamfered surround on the left return of the outshut. The right front elevation of Forest View has three first-floor windows. The ground floor has a boarded door flanked by tall, narrow windows, all under a concrete lintel with a hoodmould. To the right, there is a small window and a 2-light double-chamfered mullion window with a hoodmould. The first floor features 1-, 2-, and 1-light casement windows.

Historically, in 1617, Raydale House was the site of the Raydale Riot, where Sir Thomas Metcalfe of Nappa Hall besieged the house with 60 armed men due to a dispute with his tenant, William Robinson of Worton.
