Description
Old Hall is a farmhouse located in Carlton Town, dating from the early 18th century but incorporating older materials, possibly from the late 17th century, with later 18th-century alterations. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and features a stone slate roof. It has a T-shaped plan and stands two storeys high, with a partial rear outshut and three first-floor windows. The exterior includes quoins and a single-storey pent-roofed scullery-cum-porch added between the second and third bays. This porch is quoined and has a board door set in an ashlar surround with interrupted jambs.
Inside the porch, there is a blocked 18th-century doorway with a cornice, and to its right, a board door in a chamfered ashlar surround. The first and second bays each have a three-light flat-faced mullion window in an ashlar architrave on both floors. The third bay features a four-pane sash window in a double-chamfered surround on the ground floor and a two-light double-chamfered mullion window on the first floor. The building has ashlar copings and stacks located between the first and second bays and at the right end.
At the rear, the centre of the outshut has a door with six vertical panels in a quoined surround, featuring a moulded arris and outer moulding that forms a keystone shape on the lintel. To the right of this door, the outshut projects slightly further and has a two-light flat-faced mullion window in an ashlar architrave for the landing. The right return of the outshut has a first-floor two-light double-chamfered mullion window.
Inside, the ground-floor room to the left was formerly a cheese room, and the central room features an inglenook fireplace with a curved bressumer. The lean-to scullery includes a large flat sink made from a single piece of stone and has curved oak roof timbers that may be reused crucks.
