Description

Rathmell Fold is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and a restoration in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and features a graduated stone slate roof. It has two storeys and three bays, with the first bay projecting and having a gabled roof with a lower ridge. The corners of the building are marked by quoins.

In the first bay, there are remnants of recessed chamfered mullion windows, which originally had three or more lights on the ground floor, although one window has been inserted to the left and one mullion is missing. The first floor has a three-light window, with one mullion also missing. The gable features moulded kneelers and coping, topped with a short corniced stack at the apex.

The second bay has a blocked original entrance with a basket-arched lintel and chamfered quoined jambs on the left, and a board door in a plain surround on the right, serving both the ground and first floors. The third bay has a half-glazed door and a window to the right, similar to the second bay. A tall corniced ashlar stack is positioned along the ridge, aligned with the original entrance.

There are later additions to the right of the building, beyond the remains of the quoins, which are not included in the listing. The interior was not inspected during the resurvey. Rathmell Fold is one of several 17th-century farmhouses in the village that likely underwent division and changes to the windows in the late 18th century to create two or more cottages, responding to the need for housing for workers in the lead mines on Grassington Moor. The building is currently in the process of restoration.
