Description
Petworth Railway Station, now disused, was formerly part of the Mid-Sussex Line and was built in 1867. The station features a symmetrical design with an unusual use of slatted wood on a brick base. It is a single-storey building topped with a hipped slate roof and brick chimneystacks. The central section projects and contains six sash windows with glazing bars, all set in moulded wooden architraves, with the cills supported by wooden console brackets. The entire structure has a wooden bracket eaves cornice, and there are friezes at the top and bottom featuring alternately slanted panels. The corners are accentuated by angle pilasters topped with simple wooden capitals. The central doorcase includes a rectangular fanlight. The left wing has four sash windows, while the right wing features two doors positioned above the slatted panels at the base, likely used for storage. The interior, including the booking hall and waiting room, remains unaltered.
