Description
Aldworth House is a Grade I listed building designed by Sir James Knowles for Lord Tennyson and constructed in 1869. Tennyson lived in the house, primarily during the summer months, to escape the increasing number of visitors at Farringford on the Isle of Wight. He passed away in the house on October 6, 1892. The house is built in a semi-Gothic style and features two storeys and an attic, with three windows facing south. It is constructed from local sandstone and has an open parapet. The high hipped slate roof is adorned with three tall gabled dormers, each topped with elaborate finials. The south front includes stone mullioned casement windows and a splayed bay on both the ground and first floors. The west front has a flat bay, behind which is the ballroom with an attic above. The east front features a wide portico with three pointed arches. The building is listed Grade I due to its significant historical associations.
