Description
Lancaster House, which includes Charles Hennings, Caterers and Wine Merchants, is a house that has been converted into shops. It was formerly occupied by the Haslemere Co-operative Society and was originally known as York & Lancaster House. This building dates back to the 17th century or earlier and features a timber frame that was refaced with red brick in the 19th century. It has two storeys with a central section that has three windows, topped by a balustraded parapet, flanked by projecting gabled wings with two windows each and attic windows in the gables. The roof is tiled. The building has sash windows, some of which still have intact glazing bars, and a modern shop front. The west wall is made of sandstone and features two large chimney breasts, one of which has a crow-stepped red brick stack and a blocked original window. The south front is made of 18th-century sandstone. Inside, the house contains 16th and 17th-century panelling and a 17th-century staircase.
