Description
The Old Market House is an 18th-century building located on South Street in Midhurst. Originally serving as the Market Hall, it now functions as an annex of the Spread Eagle Hotel. The structure features a restored 16th-century timber frame with modern red brick infilling. The ground floor, which was originally open, is now enclosed. The first floor juts out on the northeast and west sides, supported by moulded bressumers and brackets. The north front has two oversailing gables with shallow projecting bars on brackets and pedimented heads, while the south front is tile-hung. The building has a tiled roof and casement windows. At one time, it extended further south. Access to the first floor is provided by an outside wooden staircase. The building has two storeys and an attic in the gables, with two windows on each front.
