Description
The Shepherd's Hut, located to the northeast of New Barn at Birling Farm in East Dean, dates from the 19th century. This small, single-storey rectangular building is constructed with flints and features red brick quoins and a chimney breast. It has a gabled tiled roof with a catslide at the back. The hut has one window, which is currently unglazed. Inside, it originally had a long bench and a bunk on each side, although only one of these remains. There is a fireplace in the end wall, which has been partly bricked in. This building is listed for its sociological significance as a notable example of a structure that represents a way of life that has now largely disappeared.
