Description
The Gun Inn is a public house that was originally a house. The north wing dates back to before 1530 and features a three-bay crosswing. The former open hall and service end have been incorporated into a later building to the south, which includes a late 18th-century door case. The entire structure was refurbished in the early 20th century. The north wing may be a late 15th-century crosswing, constructed from timber but covered in roughcast, with down braces visible on the right side gable and a tiled roof that has later brick chimneystacks on the north side.
The exterior is two storeys high with irregular early 20th-century window placements. The south wing is also roughcast and has a hipped tiled roof. It features two irregularly-placed windows, which are double or triple sashes, including one of Venetian type that appears to be early 20th century. The genuine late 18th-century door case has an open pediment, engaged columns, a semi-circular fanlight, and a door with six fielded panels. There is a plaster plaque of a gun on the east wall. The two wings are connected by a linking portion, with five windows facing east.
Inside, the north wing retains a crownpost roof and high arched braces on the first floor, indicating a two-floored upper chamber, with a dais beam visible in the bar area. The south wing features a dogleg staircase with turned balusters and a square newel post, dado panelling, and a wooden fireplace in Georgian style.
