Description

Numbers 1 and 2 Oak Cottages are two cottages that were formerly a public house. Number 1 is a purpose-built public house dating from the early to mid 19th century, while Number 2 is a timber-framed cottage that dates from the 17th century or earlier.

Number 1 features a stuccoed exterior with incised lines that mimic masonry. It has a hipped tiled roof sloping to the south, with one external rendered chimneystack on the north side and a larger stack on the south. The building has two storeys and a basement. On the first floor, there is one six-pane sash window with horns, and on the ground floor, there are two canted bays with horned sashes and a four-panelled door accessed by four cemented steps.

Number 2 is timber-framed, with red brick cladding on the ground floor and tile-hanging above, featuring a south wing constructed in header bond brickwork. It has a steeply-pitched hipped tiled roof and two storeys with two windows. Most of the windows are from the 20th century, but there is one early 19th-century sliding casement window on the west front and two on the north front. The doors on the east and west sides are plank doors.

Inside, Number 2 has an exposed frame with a midrail and exposed floor joists. There are several plank doors, including one three-plank door from the 17th century, an early 19th-century basket grate, and an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer and brackets.
