Description
The Tithe Barn, located south west of Court House Farm in Alciston, is a Grade I listed building that dates back to the 16th century. This large L-shaped structure is one of the longest and finest barns in the county and was part of the grange buildings associated with Battle Abbey. The exterior is faced with flints and features red brick quoins, topped by a hipped tiled roof. The barn has a hipped wagon entrance and two dormers on the south side, with a similar entrance and one dormer on the west side, while the north side has no dormers. Inside, the roof showcases alternate tie-beams with diagonal braces and tall curved quasi-braces that resemble cruck construction, with a small piece across at the top instead of a point.
