Description

This is an early 18th-century barn, byre, and enclosing wall located at Hamsey. The barn is constructed of flint, with a base of quoins stone and a brick upper portion. The northwest side of the barn has weatherboarding, and the roof is half-hipped and covered in asbestos sheeting. A weatherboarded gable end features a hoist door, and there are two triangular brick ventilation holes. The barn is a six-bay structure with an aisle on the northwest side. Some of the aisle posts retain a characteristic 18th-century cut profile. The roof is an angled queen strut design, with a collar beam and staggered purlins, and the rafters are pegged without a ridge piece. Adjoining the barn to the west is a 19th-century, L-shaped, open-sided byre built of flint with red brick dressings, supported on six posts with brick padstones, and covered by a hipped slate roof. A flint wall, with semi-circular brick coping, encloses the fold yard.
