Description
The shippon and hayloft at Cornfields Farmhouse is a building that dates back to the early 17th century and was later modified into farm buildings in the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings and features a graded Kerridge stone-slate roof. The structure is rectangular, with the original farmhouse and cottage combined to create a long range that slopes downhill.
The farmhouse section is two storeys high and originally consisted of four bays. The north front has three square openings from the 19th century, which are situated under hammer-dressed lintels, and the roof was raised during this period. At the rear, there are blocked single light fire windows in the end bays, along with two three-light hollow-chamfered stone mullions (one of which has been partly altered) and a similar two-light window above.
Inside the farmhouse, there is a bevelled fire surround and some chamfered beams. The cottage part is also two storeys and has three bays. Its north front features a blocked two-light hollow-chamfered mullion (with the mullion missing), an original bevelled doorcase with a 19th-century door, a complete two-light window on the left end, and altered two-light windows at the rear. The interior of the cottage includes a fireplace with a mantelpiece supported by fluted consoles and ovolo-moulded beams on the ground floor.
