Description
This is a barn located to the northeast of Highlow Hall, dating from the mid-17th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble gritstone, featuring quoins, ashlar dressings, coped gables, and a concrete tile roof. The barn is single-storey with an overloft added at the southeast end and consists of four roof bays.
There is an off-centre, full-height double opening leading to the threshing bay, which has a quoined surround and a segmental arched head, with planked double doors. To the southeast of this tall doorway, there are four single doorways, mostly with chamfered, quoined surrounds. One doorway has a tooled flat lintel, while the one at the southeast end features a cambered head to the lintel. All have plain plank doors.
Ventilation slits are present at four levels, and there is a dovecote in the southeast gable, which includes six tiers of perches that diminish in width, along with pairs of round-headed entry holes. Inside, the barn has tie beam trusses with cambered tie beams, angle struts, and collars, which support a double purlin roof. A large quoined opening in the upper part of the northwest gable provides access to the overloft of the adjoining cowhouse.
