Description
The Church of St Christopher is a Grade I listed building, primarily dating from the 15th century, with some later repairs and alterations. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and features a stone-slate roof. The church comprises a nave and aisles with two bays, a chancel, a west tower, and a small south porch. The exterior includes angle buttresses and rolled copings, along with two and three-light windows of various designs, some adorned with hood moulds that end in large stops carved as heads.
The west tower has four stages, featuring a deeply set west doorway and a two-light, louvred bell opening, topped with a castellated parapet and pinnacles. Inside, the south aisle arcade is supported by octagonal piers, while the north aisle is carried on a cluster of three colonnettes. The nave boasts a slightly curved, open wooden ceiling, supported by braces that spring from moulded corbels, with all major members being moulded. The chancel roof is of the open pitch type and is similar in style. The east window contains original stained glass that was restored in 1872.
An early 18th-century baluster font is present, and box pews throughout the nave and aisle were brought from Gawsworth in the 19th century. The church houses two bells made by Robert Crowch around 1430. The tower and south aisle were constructed as a result of the will of Geoffrey Downes in 1492.
