Description

The College of Missionary Chapel is a large chapel built between 1936 and 1938 by Philip Tilden for the Salesian Order. It is constructed from squared sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The building has an octagonal shape with transepts that project from the four cardinal points and small radiating chapels in between. The main facade is symmetrical, showcasing a gabled transept and a clerestorey gable above. The ground floor has triple Romanesque features, including central iron-bound doors and pointed lancets above. A small lead louvre is located at the center of the main roof.

Inside, the chapel features roughly dressed stone with red sandstone bands and dressings. The octagonal nave is topped with a domical vault and includes an ambulatory and a gallery over the west door. The chancel is distinguished by triple round-headed arches supported by two plain sandstone pillars with Romanesque capitals, leading to an altar made of cream and purple marble. There are pairs of round-headed sedilia on either side of the chancel. The architect also created paintings of St. John Bosco and the twelve stations of the cross.

Pevsner describes the chapel as an interesting yet somewhat unusual structure.
