Description

A terrace of four former mill workers' cottages was built around 1830 in Wildboarclough. The cottages are constructed of squared, coursed red gritstone with a Kerridge stone-slate gabled roof. The roof has two gable and three ridge chimneys made of stone. The terrace has two storeys, with twelve windows on the lower storey and eight on the upper storey. Nos. 1 and 2 retain their original external appearance, featuring boarded doors. Nos. 3 and 4 have had small-pane glazed doors installed in the later 20th century, with intersecting Gothic tracery that matches the windows. All the front windows are 4-pane casements with intersecting wooden tracery in pointed arched openings. Four gabled projections to the rear create yards between the cottages. Each projection has a door and a window on its right side. Originally, the terrace comprised eight dwellings arranged in a line, with alternating cottages providing access from both the front and rear. Historical records include Bryant's Map of Cheshire from 1831 and a Tithe Map for Wildboarclough from 1849, alongside Brian S Beeken’s publication, Crag Works Wildboarclough.
