Description
Bastle house, located about 50 yards north of Whitlees, is a building from the 16th or early 17th century that is currently used as a store. It has been reduced in height and re-roofed in the 19th century. The structure is made of massive random rubble with a boulder plinth and features a Welsh slate roof, measuring approximately 38 by 20 feet. There is a double door from the 18th or early 19th century to the right of the center. On the ground floor to the left, there is a small square window with a chamfered surround and a grid of four iron bars, along with a small square blocked window above it.
On the right side of the building, there is a blocked ground-floor doorway with a slightly chamfered alternating-block surround and a lintel that has a relieving arch above it.
Inside, the walls are about 54 inches thick up to approximately 7 feet, then offset by about 9 inches to support the first floor. There is a blocked gun loop on the west wall and remnants of a first-floor fireplace at the east end, along with two square recesses in the west end.
