Description
The Pound, also known as a village pinfold, is a square enclosure likely built in the 18th century, constructed from sandstone. It features a single narrow entrance located to the south. The exterior walls are made of tooled, coursed stone with quoins on edge and triangular coping, while the entrance is supported by a pair of dressed lintels. Inside, the walls are built of rubble.
This pinfold dates back to the 18th century, or possibly earlier, and is depicted on the 1857 Ordnance Survey map and all subsequent editions. Pinfolds were historically used for holding stray animals until their owners paid a fine for their release, and while many villages once had them, well-preserved examples are now rare. The Pound in Osmotherley is notably well preserved, showcasing high-quality stonework, which qualifies it for listing at grade II due to its historical significance.
