Description
The Village Pinfold in Goathland is a structure dating from the 18th century or earlier, which was restored in 1935. It is built of gritstone and has a square plan. The enclosure is formed by walls that are approximately 1.3 metres high, topped with flat coping. There is a slatted gate situated between shaped posts on the east side. To the left of the gate, a stone tablet is inscribed: "HIS MAJESTY'S MANOR OF GOATHLAND TO COMMEMORATE THE SILVER JUBILEE OF H.M. KING GEORGE V. THIS TREE WAS PLANTED BY CAPT. R. SMAILES, J.P. C.C. ON THE 6TH DAY OF MAY 1935." A stone tablet to the right of the gate lists the names of the Committee responsible for the preservation and upkeep of the commemorative chestnut tree and the pinfold.
